Standard Three
Planning for Differentiated Instruction
Item A: Modified Lesson Plan - Lifecycles
![]()
| Standard 3 deals with the teacher and how they understand instructional planning related to the curriculum goals and the diverse student groups in their classroom. It specifically states that planning for instruction is when, "The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement." My Modified Lesson Plan on “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” specifically takes knowledge indicator 3C and expands upon it. It states, “The competent teacher understands cultural, linguistic, cognitive, physical, and social and emotional differences, and considers the needs of each student when planning instruction. The assignment for my SPED 319 Language and Communication Disorders class was to write a modified lesson plan that could be used to teach students with mild to moderate communication disorders. The adaptations in this lesson plan successfully differentiated learning for potential students that I could teach with language delays. |
Item B: Literature Based Unit
| To show my knowledge of instructional planning, I have attached a Literature based unit I created while taking Education 310, Teaching Reading. Knowledge indicator 3B states that, "The competent teacher understands how to develop short- and long-range plans, including transition plans, consistent with curriculum goals, student diversity, and learning theory." Throughout the course of the class we learned a variety of strategies to teach reading. Through this I was able to develop a Unit Plan on the novel, "The Whipping Boy". I included a variety of activities, strategies and accommodations that will work for students of varying learning styles. |
